Widely recognized as a symbol of US involvement in the Vietnam War, the Huey goes back more than half a century. A military masterpiece, it also has a legacy of civilian roles including much needed transportation for humanitarian needs, medical evacuations, and search and rescue.

Originally named the HU-1 (which is where Huey comes from), this historic helicopter has many nicknames too, including Cobras when fitted with machine guns; Hogs when carrying rocket pods; and Slicks when they were not armed. Different models (or variants) have different uses, for instance UH-1Ds have larger cabin space and became mainly utility helicopters while the smaller 1Bs and 1Cs were used mostly as gunships. HH-1Ks were used for search and rescue. The UH-1H was a high quantity model commonly used for combat-ready soldiers.
